EU food safety institutions

  • DG Health and consumer protection – Over the years the European Union has established EU laws on the safety of food and other products, on consumers' rights and on the protection of people's health. The Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General has the task of keeping these laws up to date.

  • The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) – the keystone of European Union (EU) risk assessment regarding food and feed safety. In close collaboration with national authorities and in open consultation with its stakeholders, EFSA provides independent scientific advice and clear communication on existing and emerging risks.

  • New Animal Health Strategy - the new Animal Health Strategy provides the framework for animal health and welfare measures over the next six years. Given the devastating impact that serious disease outbreaks can have on farmers, society and the economy, the new strategy is based on the principle that “prevention is better than cure”. The aim is to put greater focus on precautionary measures, disease surveillance, controls and research, in order to reduce the incidence of animal disease and minimise the impact of outbreaks when they do occur.

  • EU and Avian influenza - In response to the heightened risk of avian flu, the EU has increased preventive and control measures to ensure early detection of infected birds and help contain the disease in the event of an outbreak. EU legislation in this area has been complemented by emergency measures to guarantee a swift, efficient and coherent response to avian influenza outbreaks.
